Diabetes and Thalassemia

Hi Everyone,
I have been asked questions about diabetes management in Thalassemia by many members here.. unfortunately I am not able to help them.

I am hoping to get some information from all you friends out there who are coping with diabetes besides thalassemia.

I want to find out -
- How severe is the diabetes that is related to Thalassemia?
- What medication do you take (if any) to bring your sugar levels down?
- Do you take insulin or naturopathy medicines?
- What is a advise one with diabetes (and thalassemia) has for another thal who is not yet diabetic?

I would sincerely appreciate replies from the members on this very important issue.

thank you.

Vikram

Re: Diabetes and Thalassemia

Thanks Pankaj and Azadeh for replying back to the questions.
There is no doubt that managing both thal and diabetes is very tough..and needs LOT of care and deligence.

Do you guys also follow strict diet regiment besides avoiding sugar and starch?

Doctors say that in thalassemia - diabetes is usually induced by iron overload when ferratin levels are quite high is that true?? I am asking this because I've noticed that someone who is keeping a low ferratin might also have diabetes...

Re: Diabetes and Thalassemia

Hieee guys,
Am writing after ages, but this is one thing which concerns me unlike Viku's tips on wedding which are a rage on our forum. So, here i am with my input. Am diabetic since 2001, on insulin twice a day.Well, diabetics need to go for regular check ups. In our case, 4 things need to be taken care of, DENTAL, EYE, FOOT AND SKIN CARE. Rest includes, regular blood tests, GLYCOSLATED HB[it tells d sugar levels of last 3 months],LIPID PROFILE for cholestrol, yearly urine and eye test. Diet, Exercise and proper treatment are v.essentiel. I was really strict with myself regarding diet bt now am a bit lenient, and work out is important.
As pankaj said, one needs to keep iron under control, well that holds true in all cases if one doesnt want to invite unwanted problems. Am not that very old to say this, but whatever has to happen , it will. We cant and wont be able to stop it, inspite of our taking XTRA care. And dont forget that thalassemics are prone to diabetes. I really used to curse my doc because he put me directly on insulin the day he got my report. I wanted to try some oral medication but according to him with my insulin level being 393 ,there was no way out except for insulin.Well, would have known if he let me try.

anyways guys, chill . take gud care of yourself and have fun

keep smiling

Re: Diabetes and Thalassemia

Thanks for the info - Surbhi and Pankaj.

I think this is a serious issue...
I'm also thinking that a lot of thals are not very active - especially those who dont play sports or excersice etc.. because diabetes is linked to lifestyle and with thalassemia the chances increase many folds.

Kidneys are also affected with high sugar levels i think.

Re: Diabetes and Thalassemia

Hi Surbhi, Pankaj, Azadeh and to all who are grappling diab

After reading your threads, I feel like a heel. I am carping day-in-and-day-out because I have fractured my femur. I can't move about much until it fully heals. So my doc has put me on a diet so I don't gain unnecessary weight. Unfortunately i have a sweet tooth and a sharp temper, so being off sweets make my temper sharper. Am I ashamed now! I will happily stay away from those rosgollas, snickers, mousse, etc now on.

Thanx and keep the spirit going!
