Dear All, Hi,
The anti coagulant in the blood bag is responsible for the depletion of Calcium from the body of blood transfusion dependent persons,so be careful to take supplement to refurbish Calcium in the body.
Every Human Body has it's own constitution but depletion of Calcium can be high or low.
The symptoms are finger bones of hands bending in the palm the legs & feet getting stiff, pain in the bones.
Hope all of you are taking oral calcium, if not start now.

Hello Rajeshjee,
Bone health in Thals is very important as Osteoporosis is becoming a major problem as thal population ages.
Calcium is very important as I have heard due to chelation thals loose calcium from their body
From:- http://www.enerex.ca/articles/calciu...sium_ratio.htm Quote:
Function of Calcium- Development and maintenance of bones and teeth (about 99% of body calcium is in bones and teeth)
- Blood clotting
- Muscle contraction and relaxation
- Transmission of nerve impulses
- Enzyme activation for production of gastric juices
- Fat, protein and carbohydrate metabolism
- pH balance

Dear all,
Neel is right in saying that why not milk?
Milk is not only a complete food but medicine as well.
Milk contains 84.2% water, 6.6% fat, 5.2% sugar, 3.5% protein and 0.7% other minerals. Mother's milk is proved to be the best milk.
Calcium supplements should be taken per doctors advice and one must adhere to rich calcium diet.

Calcium is important in Thals because our bone marrow works so much harder to produce healthy red blood cells and because of this our bones can become thin and weak which could sometimes lead to osteoporosis.
It won't do you any harm to take a normal supplement if you want to but eating lots of cheese, skimmed milk (it has more calcium in it) and yogurt will also do the trick. Vitamin D is also important because it helps the body absorb the calcium you take in.
Your doctors can test your blood for its calcium levels and if you are worried about your bones, you can have a DEXA bone density scan every couple of years.

Heya,
Im taking special o..... pills since nov 07. Since 6 months I have a new doc. He's the best doc i ever had. He treat me as a thal patient. (i got an other blood disease) and came up with thing i never heard or other docs never believed me. Im only in the early stage of osteoprosis so this can help :)
In mine case it came from chelation therapy. Other minerals/metals are also low, but he doesnt think that important i guess...

Glad to see this topic! I'm only a thal minor and no treatment necessary. BUT....within the past 4 months I've had some of my teeth crack without any reasons and today I ended up having an X-Ray on my left knee cause it's swollen and the joint hurts a lot. Could this be an isolated incident or do you have to be on transfusions for it to be related?

So far so good for me for calcium. My bone density test was normal. I do get alot of aches and pains in my joints though. Maybe it is an age thing.

Well, as i was not able to take any sort of chelation for a LONG time, i have gone through a HUGE problem of calcium deficiency. The problem started when i was about 10. The calcium used to dip suddenly and then i used to have what's called Tetany (sorry, dont know the exact spelling) spasms. i dont know what actually happened, but it was terrible! My eyes and tongue used to roll back, my hands turned and twisted in such horrible way that i often had my fingernails digging at my wrists. breathing tube contracted and i coudnt breathe. I had horrible cramps in my tummy. it was scary. and such spasms had become a thing of every day. every time they struck, i needed to be rushed to the hospital and given a calcium and magnesium shot. that worked like magic. made me feel comfortable within minutes. But next day, i was there again.
i had to stop going to school because of that. once i ever had cardiac arrest when a particularly bad spasm occurred.
then kelfer came out, and pulled me back from the brink. i had nearly reached it, by that time.

TAKE YOUR CALCIUM!!! I am 41 and I have severe bone on bone arthritis in my left hip already. My dexa scans show my bones are very weak. I have thal intermedia and was not transfused regularly as a child. I just started regular transfusions 5 years ago for quality of life purposes. The more information I find I realize I probably should have been transfused regularly sooner. My normal hemoglobin used to level around 6 or 7. This is how I functioned (barely). I think this is why my bones and joints are so weak and painful now.
Now I know better.
