WBC filter are a MUST MUST MUST if you get blood that is not completely leucocyte reduced. A leucocyte reduced blood is called "packed cells". There is no or very little WBC (white blood cells) in them. In order to get least problems WBC should be used but unfortunately the cost of these filters is clearly a major issue for a lot of ppl.

WBC are responsible for out immune system and when my WBC meet with a forign WBC they end up reacting which will cause blood transfusion reactions such as fever, skin irritation, nausea, etc.

I recall using filters before... one that were round in shape and others that had a pentagon shape. (see attached pic)

There are many kinds of filters that are used in blood transfusion. Each being different from other..offering a little different approach in leucocyte reduction.

hi mohak,
You are right upto some extent. WBC filter is more necessary in the case of whole blood transfusion. There are lesser reactions when packed RBCells are given.
But it is still recommended to use WBC filter with RBC also for proper safety. In the hospital where my nephew gets blood transfusion WBC filter is used with packed RBC.

Re: How many of you are using WBC filter????

Good question. I was looking for the answer but could not find it.

Platelets are one-tenth the size of RBC's so I would think they are not removed but I could be wrong. It also depends which WBC filter you are using.

If you give me the filter name/filter details, I can contact PALL (if that is the manufacturer) and find out more about it.

Re: How many of you are using WBC filter????

mm... leukocyte depleted blood is better than packed cells... (i believe) and therefore the chance of getting reaction is much slim because the arguement is that even WBC filters do no work 100%, you are likely to get reaction.

I wonder if someone who works in the lab as technician can help us out here.

Re: How many of you are using WBC filter????

Dear All
Here in Hyderabad (INDIA) we get saline washed packed cells with minimum of leoucocytes but still reaction occurs in certain cases the reason being :

1) Any Blood group has different sub groups like A+ve has 7 are named A1+ve & likewise.

2) O-ve has 2 types Phenotype & Bombay group.

3) All blood groups have sub groups so every time you go for transfusion your main group is cross matched but sub groups left out so sometime you get reaction because of sub group being other than what you are.

4) VIK is right 100% filters cannot assure, the reason is above.

with regards

Re: How many of you are using WBC filter????

Hi there...

I use a WBC filter even though the hospital is giving me packed RBCs because I get very terrible feverish reaction if I don't use the filters. Fortunately, the Gov. of Malaysia's Health Ministry as step up programs and gave a min. of 10 million budget for Thal Patients in Malaysia. So basically all medication (including filters) are free. But that's just recently...back 5 years ago, things were a whole lot different. Money was key to survival here..=S but Thank God things changes. =)
There's gonna be a Seminar on Thal coming May in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur and whoever who's from Malaysia should think about going for it. You can raise suggestions and questions about Thal to help improve situation in Malaysia. If you think of coming just private mesg me and I'll give you more detailed info. It's open to anyone actually...=D..

Totally and crazily in love with the Jonas Brothers!

Re: How many of you are using WBC filter????

i have never used the WBC filter. till about four years ago, i was living in an official township, away from any city. the blood i used tog get was donated by my father's colleagues and i got the transfusion done in the company's private little hospital. yeah, reactions at the time of BT were common, till i started taking pills like Avil before the start of BT.
now, since my father is retired from that company, we r getting blood (packed cells) from red cross.

Life is Beautiful!
