5 Month old on Blood transfusion, basically all vegetables have iron & side effect of Blood transfusion is iron deposit so chelation of overloaded iron is the best by Desferal mounted on pump with subqutaneous needle for 8-10 hours, still avoid the following:

1) Palak & all green leafy vegetables because more of iron content.
2) Bannana & Apple but bannana can be eaten in the evening & apple can be given peeled the upper crust has iron.
3) Yolk of Egg.
4) Red Meat.
5) Avoid Medicines with iron content.

Any other question do ask.
with regards

Hello,

I dont think that a baby such as 5 months old should be on any diet...Plus its not recommened even by doctors to give desferal at that young age....

Hi

Here Smurfette is right, how can one start desferal at a age of 5 .
Other thing when chelation is given as per requirement i don't think there is any need on avoid any kind of food, etc.
Yes you should avoid medicines containing iron.

Pranav

Re: Diet for Thalassemia Patient

Thank you Pranav

I agree with what you said too..that you must avoid vitamins with iron in them...but I stand in what I said..you cant alter a 5 months old diet...and no doctor here in australia i think will never put a 5 month old on desferal...

Ashutosh, It's good if your son is not on a diet because he is too young.
Even when he is older, there should be no specific diet restriction. The only thing you might want to consider when he is a few years older is to avoid food items that have a HIGH iron content (what rajeshpop wrote).
