Question What are your Hb Levels before transfusion

Hello Guys,

Im a Thal Maj patient from UK, i regularly check my Hb levels like most of us and my Hb levels are normally 10.5-12 before transfusions. I've just recently been transfused and my Hb was 12.2 and i only needed 2 units. I am transfused every 4 weeks. Was just wondering what other thal patients Hb levels are before Transfusions and respectively the length of time before transfusions.

Thanks

Re: What are your Hb Levels before transfusion

Hey x_jat_x,
How are you doing bud? long time no see.. A great post though!

I voted 9-10, as I am usually in that range.

However, I want to say that it's very difficult to maintain a level of Hb pre-transfusion in some places where there are regular blood shortages. In many countries blood is being provided by commercial as well as non-commercial blood banks and the supply of blood is not always on-demand. Instead patients have to wait for days to get blood, especially in the summers.

In those cases it becomes EXTREMELY difficult for patients to maintain a good level of Hb. I have also heared and seen cases where patients sometimes need to pay MONEY to get blood... its horrible and sad.

Hi there Vic!

Wow, what a quick response that was!!!! I was just browsing through this site (which by the way I find very intersting and informative...thank you for referring it to my attention) when I noticed the question being asked for the poll regarding the Hb levels before transfusion and I was just testing it and did not realize that my response had gone through. I think this is a great site and you have done a superb job on it......keep up the excellent work as you are reaching a lot of people and providing a lot of information that is very valuable to all Thals world wide.

By the way, you are correct when you state that your Hb level prior to transfusion really depends on the supply of blood in each country and the amount each individual recieves on a monthly/bi-weekly basis.
p.s you should be getting some rest now...aren't you working tomorrow?

Hey vik, i'm with a son 18+maintaining Hb %9-10 pre transfusion, there are people who maintain Hb 6-7 complain for being sick so management is most important to lead a normal life this genetic disorder if managed properly can do wonders so maintain Hb%9-10 pre transfusion,in summer please plan in advance, inform the donors, the summer of 2005 was managed properly &no shortage of Blood in Hyderabad (INDIA), they do sell but being helpless.

Re: What are your Hb Levels before transfusion

That was'nt silly mistake that was a blunder mistake. anyway I can maintain Hb inbetween 8gm/dl to 9gm/dl . I have fixed my routine to get myself transfused in every 14 days i.e. every altenate saturday with single unit and some times double unit if the quantity of blood is low in the blood bag.

Re: What are your Hb Levels before transfusion

here in mumbai all the haematologists advice to maintain the pre transfusion Hb at 11gm/dl. so that the post Hb level is 14gm/dl thats the normal Hb of a human being.

Re: What are your Hb Levels before transfusion

hi friends

i checked up with some doctors in 2 diffrent hospitals , in both cases they say pre-transfusion hb must not be more than 11 its harmfull for us.
so Mr. patsons please check up with some doctors that is it right to get transfusion when hb is above 11

Regards
