Re: Duration of Blood Trans.

i get 3 bags (250 each) every 4-5 weeks
usually my hb is about 8-9 before i take the blood.
i keep it running slow. takes about 7-8 hours. usually the last bag takes a lot of time cuz ur body has more blood than before :P

Neel_R i get nose bleeds all the time. drink a lot of water and try not to exhaust urself when ur playing/working out. it will help with them nose bleeds. it happens to me alot during the summer when its hot and dry.

Re: Duration of Blood Trans.

Interesting topic of discussion. I get 3 units every 5 weeks and for a female, that's very rare I hear just because their bodies go through monthly cycles. In canada, or at least at the hospital I go to, there is about anywhere between 200-320 mls per bag and that also depends on the shape of the bag. Sometimes the bags are round shaped and other times its smaller (square)....Less is always better I say...less iron is better for you, which means less desferal. LESS IS MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Duration of Blood Trans.

I get 3 bags every three weeks. They used to be big about 350-420mls, but since i've been getting the leucocyte depleted blood the bags are much smaller 320max but they are just as effective. If i run they blood too fast i get minor reactions. It's not the blood its the desferal in the blood i think! With the question as to how often is correct i think that is up to the indivivdual. I think you should try to maintain your hb at about 10 give or take a little bit.

Re: Duration of Blood Trans.

I get 1 unit every two weeks. The hosp. has hard time getting blood thus, they maintain the HB to 8-9 g/dl only :(

Re: Duration of Blood Trans.

Yeah, I know.

It's a sad story here in Rawalpindi. The most concern here is just to survive with Thal. rather than having a perfect life with Thal.

Kids here hardly survive till their teens and I am one of the lucky few who had a better life earlier that has enabled me to push this far

Re: Duration of Blood Trans.

Hi all,

I am fortunate I think atleast in some terms. I go for trans every 5 or 6 weeks
My hb before trans is usually 8.5 to 9. I get one unit that is 300ml and that is more than enough petrol to keep me going for about 50-55 days and the best part is I have excellent veins! This is a record for sure, I have never been pricked twice.
