Hi Yvette,
I'm Mrs T's brother, I also have Thal Intermediate. As you start to learn more about Thal , you will start to realize that the intermediate is very complex. I can tell you that we do have a tremendous network through out the country that can help with any situations. CA has some of the best research DR's who are very comitted to all Thal Patiences.
You made not need to find a Dr who specializes in Thal, but a DR who is willing to reach out to other Doctors. Our Dr, my sisters and my Dr, realized that our needs where beyond her expertize and she reached out to Doctors in both CA and Mass. . By doing this , it has basically saved my life.
Anyway, i guess the point that i would like to make is , as you learn more about the disorder you have , don't get discouraged. Their are people that can help point you in the right direction.

Mrs T & Dominick,
Marientina advised that you guys could probably help with my questions since you are Thal Inter around my age.
I just recieved back my CBC. My Hgb: 9.6, Hematocrit 29.8, MCV 77.8, MCH 25.0 and RDW 15.6
With all of the reading I've been doing, it seems as if I'm on the boarder of Minor and intermedia. Because I know my blood has never been in the 10 range, it falls in the intermedia range. But the MCV & MCH are in the range of thal minor.
Yet my concern is the symptoms I now know I've had throughout the years. like the body ache in the morning. It's hard for me to say how bad it was, but what I do know is that it's been for so long and it hurts bad enough that my kids would message me to help me to get up from bed. But I just always thought it was just me.
Knowing now that my marrow has been working that hard for so many years. And also knowing that all of the iron treatments I was given throughout the years (injection & IV), that iron has had to go somewhere.
I've also read about heart palpatations. For me, I've always felt cramps in my chest. I would just stretch till it eased up. But that has always been normal for me as well.
So, my question to you is, what symptoms do you have as you age? Or what would be your advice to look out for because of my age?
Thanks, Yvette

You should test him for thal minor since he may have inherited that from you.
We have several folks here who have had splenectomies and I am sure they will reply soon. I don't know at which point that decision is to be made. You're not quite low enough for another transfusion and if indeed you have thal intermedia more transfusions mean having to start worrying about iron overload. What is your ferritin level lately?
My spleen is slightly enlarged and I have just thal trait. It was huge when I was a child. I always had a big tummy... | |
Thanks & Regards
