thalassemia and gallbladder stones

hi guys...

im thals intermedia, my hb is bout 8, sometimes 7.8. i only get transfusion if my hb lower than 7.
last weeks my doctors said there is stone in my gallbladder, then they took that stone with laparascopi methode to decrease bleeding. but i dont understand how that stone can be in my gallbladder coz im not fat, my cholesterol never high.

may thalassemia cause gallbladder stone???, or maybe there is correlation between thalassemia and gallbladder stone..??

thanks

Re: thalassemia and gallbladder stones

Greetings
I had my gallbladder removed when I was 19 yrs old , I have Thal intermedia. There is a connection between Thalassemia and gall stones, has nothing to do with weight.

Re: thalassemia and gallbladder stones

Hey,
My son (6.5 years old) hes beta thal intermedia hb levels arond 7.5.
got 4 transfusions till now only below 7.
Now the doctors advise to give transfusions on a basic level 'cause it's not healthy to grow with that kind of hb level.
How old are U? Did your doctors ever advise u to get basic transfusion?
Thx a lot

Re: thalassemia and gallbladder stones

It is not healthy for your heart to consistently run a HB under 9. It is also very bad for your bones. Found this out at 40 years old. I just turned 43. I'm lucky I don't have heart damage. My sister was not so lucky. She passed at 44 years old. Find a Thalassemia specialist. Regular hematologists don't know the important details. Most children's hospitals have Thal specialists and will see adults. I feel amazingly better and have a better quality of life since hyper-transfusing. I go in every 3 weeks. Also, go for a dexa scan if you haven't already. Your bones are probably at high risk for fracture.

I had my gallbladder out at 30. It was completely filled with black stones which are dead red blood cells. They have to go somewhere. Your liver is a big filter attached to your gallbladder. My spleen removed at 10 years old. They thought because I didn't have the spleen, the gallbladder was affected. I think it would have happened anyway.
