Hi everyone,

My name is Radziah, or you may call me Rad, in short. I'm 35 years old, a Beta Thal Intermedia from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I was officially diagnosed in 1999 although I kind of knew that I had Thal since I was young, as 3 of my siblings also have Thal (I'm the youngest in the family). My eldest brother had exactly the same condition as me; however, he passed away in 2001 at the age of 54 due to organ failures.

So far, I have not had any blood transfusion or iron chelation therapy, and I take folic acid and vitamin E daily. I'm seeing a great haemotogist here, who is one of the renowned Thal "experts" in the country. I feel fine so far, although I've had bouts of fatigue and more recently, heart palpitations. These I believe are quite common among Thals, and...they are usually signs for me to take it easy (I work as a Brand & Communications manager with an insurance firm, which can be hectic sometimes). I'm usually ok after a good rest.

I've been following this forum for Thals, friends and supporters since I came across the Yahoo! forum founded by Lisa. Even though I very seldom post messages, I've found many useful info shared by other members. I'm glad that the forum has evolved to this. Kudos to Andy & Vic! Lisa has passed on the baton to such wonderful friends like you. Great job, guys!

I hope many more Thals will join this forum and share info and experiences, both good and bad. I look forward to knowing other Thals around the world. Good luck and always keep your spirit up!

Rad

Re: Hi everyone

Hi Rad Ismail

I’m Sara I’m from Iran. I'm thalassemia major. I have to have blood transfusion and it is usually 2 packs cells with WBC filter every 2 month. I take Hydroxy urea capsule, folic acid 5mg and Desfral every night.
I intend to study in Malaysia University. Since all insurance companies in Malaysia do not insure anyone who already has record of bad health or hereditary health problems to foreigners, I have to pay my own expenses of treatment, so I need to know cost of good treatment for foreign thalesamia in Malaysia. I sent an email to thalesamia society of Malaysia but they haven’t replied me yet. Please help me I realy need your help . I want to know the Costs of thalassemia treatment in Malaysia. What is the cost of treatment in Malaysia for foreign thalesamia

Regards
Sara
